Tru runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 19 September to 14 November 2026
Charlotte d'Amboise joins Jesse Tyler Ferguson, directed by Rob Ashford
The play is set in December 1975 and drawn entirely from Truman Capote's words
Jay Presson Allen's play was first staged in 1989
Charlotte d’Amboise has been cast alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson in Tru, Jay Presson Allen’s play about Truman Capote. It begins at the Menier Chocolate Factory on Saturday 19 September and continues until 14 November 2026.
Rob Ashford, an award-winning director, is in charge of the staging. Ferguson has won several awards of his own. The production comes to London after a New York run earlier this year that drew strong reviews from critics.
What Tru is about
The action takes place in December 1975. Capote has no company in his flat in New York. He is still shaken by a crisis that ended his friendships with the elite social set he had loved.
Allen built the script from Capote’s own words, so every line on stage is his. The production describes the play as funny and heartbreaking. It shows a writer at breaking point, dealing with the fallout from his most scandalous work.
A new production of a 1989 play
Tru was first performed in 1989. This staging is a new one. Ashford, Ferguson and d’Amboise shaped it together in March, working in the library of the House of the Redeemer in New York.
The London run brings the three of them back together, with Ashford directing and his two collaborators on stage.
