Magritte's paintings shown with work by more than 40 other artists

A large selection of Magritte’s surrealist paintings is on show for free at Gagosian’s Grosvenor Hill gallery in Mayfair, hung next to work by more than 40 other artists. The exhibition runs until 12 December 2026.
Titled This Is Still Not a Pipe, with the subtitle The Afterlife of Magritte, the show traces how his odd view of the world keeps surfacing in other artists’ work. The name returns to Magritte’s long-running point about the gap between a painting and the thing it depicts. A pipe in the exhibition bears a revised version of his well-known message.
What to see at the Magritte exhibition
Apples and bowler hats turn up again and again, set against cloudy skies. The Philosopher’s Lamp shows a man whose nose curls round into his pipe, while a twisting candle stands next to him. Elsewhere there is a formally dressed figure with a vast, balloon-like head, and trees that seem to have glowing eyes.
Big sculptures occupy the centre of the gallery, one of them a pile of bricks. Jeff Koons is represented by a gleaming locomotive in stainless steel. Soshiro Matsubara’s piece, a bird with a woman’s face, is far smaller and lies on its back. Curtains in strong colours line the walls, and some of the paintings are set deep into chunky frames.
