Hammersmith Road cycleway to become permanent after council backs TfL’s £20m plan
Cabinet voted unanimously for the C9 scheme, which adds three floating bus stops. A resident had urged councillors to reject it over safety.
Track work also closes part of the Weaver line for the weekend and shuts the Hertford East branch for nine days.
Passengers heading to Stansted Airport will not be able to take a direct train from Liverpool Street on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October while track work goes ahead north of London.
Instead, travellers are advised to go from King’s Cross to Cambridge and change there for the airport. There is no extra fare to pay for the detour.
The same engineering work shuts the London Overground Weaver line between Edmonton Green and Cheshunt for the whole weekend. Buses will replace trains on that stretch every 30 minutes. Trains to Chingford and Enfield Town are not affected.
GBR Anglia, the government-owned operator that brings together c2c and Greater Anglia, is carrying out the work as part of a wider improvement project. For nine days, from Saturday 17 October to Sunday 25 October, no trains will run on the Hertford East branch while engineers replace a kilometre of track that was badly damaged by flooding.
That flooding came last December. Sewage from a Thames Water pipe swamped the line through Rye House station, and the branch was out of action for a week. Engineers carried out some repairs at the time. Network Rail said that putting in new rails, sleepers and ballast this time should mean the stretch needs no further work for 50 years.
Until the branch reopens, services that usually link Hertford East with London will begin and end their journeys at Broxbourne or Bishop’s Stortford instead.
Martin Beable, GBR Anglia’s chief operating officer, said replacing the track through Rye House after last year’s floods was essential. He said “there’s never a good time to close the railway”, apologised for the disruption and urged passengers to plan ahead if they can.

Places for London has finished converting 12 arches under the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines and is now looking for businesses to move in.
Two station assistants turned wasteland into a community garden. Public voting runs until Sunday 18 October, and the winner will be named on 20 October.
Engineers saw young people doing handstands on the line and racing trains. The crossing will stay closed until Network Rail has dealt with the problem.
