Quentin Tarantino wrote the play and is directing it. It is his first work for the stage
The rest of the cast, beyond Sacha Baron Cohen, will be announced later
Sacha Baron Cohen will play the lead in The Popinjay Cavalier, the first play Quentin Tarantino has written for the stage. It opens at the Phoenix Theatre on 18 March 2027, and tickets go on sale today, Monday 12 October.
Tarantino, 63, is also directing. He said he was “keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out”. No other casting has been announced yet, and the full company will be confirmed later.
What The Popinjay Cavalier is about
The play is a comedy of disguise and deception set in Europe in the 1830s. Its roots are in the swashbuckler films of old Hollywood and in writers from that genre, among them Jesse Lasky Jr.
Two companies are backing the show: Sonia Friedman’s theatre production business and the Hollywood studio Sony Pictures Entertainment. Friedman issued a joint statement with Tom Rothman, who chairs and runs Sony’s Motion Picture Group. They called the chance to develop the play with Tarantino “a joy and an honour”.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s first major stage lead
Baron Cohen, 54, is best known for comic characters such as Ali G and Borat. The part will be his first lead in a major stage production, although he trained with the French clown teacher Philippe Gaulier.
He said he agreed to the role as soon as Tarantino got in touch. “When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions,” he said.
Tarantino’s first feature as director was Reservoir Dogs in 1992, and his screenplay for Pulp Fiction brought him his first Oscar. He now has two Academy Awards and four Golden Globes. Baron Cohen holds three Golden Globes and has been nominated for three Oscars.
