Free exhibition space in the Southwark Cathedral café throughout 2027
Open to artists with a meaningful link to the Diocese of Southwark
Each show runs for about six weeks
Nothing to pay to apply or exhibit, but no exhibition fee for artists
Artists with ties to a large part of south London can show their work in the café at Southwark Cathedral next year without paying anything.
The cathedral is giving its whole 2027 café exhibition programme to artists connected with the Diocese of Southwark. Applying costs nothing, and neither does hanging work once chosen. Artists will not receive an exhibition fee, although the cathedral says it can help them sell pieces.
Who can apply to exhibit at Southwark Cathedral
The Diocese of Southwark is far bigger than the borough that shares its name. It covers South London and East Surrey. Southwark and Lambeth are part of it, and it stretches to Lewisham and Bromley in the south-east, Croydon and Sutton further south, and Wandsworth, Merton, Kingston and Richmond to the south-west, along with the areas around them.
Living in the diocese is not a requirement. According to the cathedral, applicants should instead be able to show a meaningful connection to somewhere inside it, whether a parish, a community or a place.
How the 2027 café exhibitions will work
The programme will run across the whole of 2027 in blocks of roughly six weeks. Each artist selected will have their work on display for that period in the café, which the cathedral describes as a busy space.
Because artists are not paid to exhibit, the offer rests on free wall space and the cathedral’s help with sales. Applications are made through an online form on the cathedral’s website.
