Decisions are expected in November 2026, and the shows run throughout 2027
Each selected artist exhibits for about six weeks in the cathedral café
Free to apply and free to exhibit, but the work must be suitable for hanging on a wall
Southwark Cathedral wants artists with links to south London and East Surrey to show their work in its café during 2027. Proposals must be in by Sunday 18 October 2026.
Every café exhibition next year will be given to local artists. The cathedral wants the programme to show off the talent and viewpoints of people tied to its wider community. Each artist chosen will have about six weeks on the café walls, a short walk from London Bridge and Borough Market.
Who can apply to exhibit at Southwark Cathedral
Applicants need a meaningful link to the Diocese of Southwark. Its area takes in Bromley, Croydon, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth, as well as East Surrey. Living there is not a requirement. What matters is that an artist can show a tie to a parish, a local community or a particular place in the diocese.
Artists pay nothing at any stage. There is no application fee, and the cathedral charges nothing for the wall space once a show is up. Many kinds of art are welcome, as long as the work can hang on a wall. Artists may pitch an existing body of work or a fresh idea for a show. They can also offer pieces responding to a theme, a place, a community or some part of life in the diocese. Joint exhibitions will be considered too.
Deadline and how to submit
The call closes on Sunday 18 October 2026, and the cathedral expects to make its decisions in November. Proposals go in through an online form on the Southwark Cathedral website. The exhibitions will run across 2027.
Comptoir Bakery, a family-run business from Bermondsey, operates the café. Its chefs and bakers make the pastries by hand in the company’s Maltby Street kitchen.
