Robert Icke adapts and directs the Oscar-winning film about Stasi surveillance, and the rest of the company has now been named. It opens on 14 October.
Keira Knightley will lead the company in the first stage version of The Lives of Others, the Oscar-winning film about Stasi surveillance, when it opens at the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand on 14 October. Stephen Dillane and Luke Thompson also head the cast, and Sonia Friedman Productions has now named everyone else in the company.
Paul Higgins and Nick Holder join them, alongside Andrew Woodall and Richard Sutton. Irfan Shamji and Sibylla Meienberg are in the company too, as are Leda Hodgson and Josh Gordon. Calum Finlay and Lucy Doyle have also been cast, with Matt Ray Brown and Jake Benson. Jamie Ankrah completes the line-up.
Robert Icke has adapted Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film for the stage and is also directing it.
The story is set in East Germany in 1984. The state puts a writer and an actor under watch, and a Stasi officer sits in the attic above their flat, listening for any sign of subversion. Keeping watch on their lives slowly starts to change his own.
The producers say the adaptation looks at the censorship of artists, surveillance by the state and the link between art and politics.
Icke and Friedman have worked together many times before. Their shared credits take in Hamlet and Oresteia, Oedipus and Manhunt, as well as The Doctor and 1984. Knightley and Friedman previously teamed up on The Children’s Hour.
