Tamsin Greig will star in a new stage version of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford at the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond this winter. The first performance is on 3 November 2026 and the last on 16 January 2027.
Greig takes the part of Matty Jenkyns, who sits at the centre of a close group of women in a small town where gossip moves fast and tradition counts for a great deal. Odd customs and unspoken rules govern daily life there. Then the 1840s bring change that nobody in the town asked for, and the residents are left with troubled friendships, lost love and the job of holding on to what matters to them.
Who is in the Cranford cast at the Orange Tree
The ensemble around Greig is Alexandra Gilbreath, Sara Powell, Abigail Cruttenden, Michael Lumsden, Phoebe Pryce, Jonny Glynn, Sara Crowe, Robert Merriam and Saffron Dey.
Josh Roche directs. He works again with Lin Coghlan and Shaun McKenna, the writers who put The Forsyte Saga on stage for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Gaskell published Cranford in 1853, and it is usually set alongside Wives and Daughters and North and South among the strongest Victorian fiction, a comic book with a hard eye on how ordinary lives actually work.
