Rebuilt 1899 Mercedes van to go on show on Pall Mall before Brighton run
The Ideal Van, built under licence by a London firm, will join the 1 November Veteran Car Run from Hyde Park to the Sussex coast.
The route takes in areas the London Transport Museum says have never been open to visitors. Adult tickets start at £39.
The London Transport Museum is running its first Halloween Hidden London tour, taking visitors through the Second World War deep shelter at Clapham South between 21 October and 1 November 2026.
The shelter lies eleven floors below Clapham Common. The tour blends accounts of wartime life with Underground legends, and railway staff’s own strange experiences also feature. Guides in character lead groups through the tunnels, helped by lighting and sound effects. Projections are also used along the route.
Visitors go in through an entrance the regular tour does not use, and the museum says some parts of the route have never been open to the public. The storytelling draws on memories of Londoners who sheltered below ground. It also uses recorded interviews in which current and former Underground workers describe sounds and sightings they could not explain.
Clapham South was completed in 1944. It was one of eight deep-level shelters dug under London during the war, with room for around 8,000 people escaping air raids.
Tours run every Wednesday to Sunday from 21 October to 1 November. The cheapest adult ticket is £39, and children and concession holders pay from £36. Tickets are sold through the London Transport Museum.
The museum has designed the evening chiefly with grown-ups in mind. The minimum age is 10.
Ticket holders get half-price entry to the museum’s Covent Garden site for a month after their tour, and under-18s get in free. The ticket also brings 10% off full-priced items in the museum shops. Any profit from Hidden London tours goes towards the museum’s charitable work and the care of London’s transport heritage.
