Rebuilt 1899 Mercedes van to go on show on Pall Mall before Brighton run
The Ideal Van, built under licence by a London firm, will join the 1 November Veteran Car Run from Hyde Park to the Sussex coast.
Nix wrote the presentation while serving as a Mind trustee. It also draws on his work on the secure units at Maudsley Hospital.
Rashid Nix brings his talk Black History As Therapeutic Practice to Brixton on Wednesday 14 October 2026. The evening runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Black Cultural Archives on Windrush Square.
The talk is the first part of a longer interactive presentation. The presentation as a whole covers 5,000 years, travelling from the Pyramids to the Projects, a phrase the organisers use for housing estates.
Nix wrote the presentation while serving as a trustee of the charity Mind. He also draws on his work on the secure units at Maudsley Hospital. There, he saw at first hand the damage the mental health crisis is doing in south London.
The ideas behind it come from Dr Carter G. Woodson and from Nathaniel Branden, who wrote on the science of self-esteem. The organisers say the aim is to use Black history to build confidence and self-esteem, which they call essential for better mental health and resilience. They add that it helps students rethink their place and status in society today.
Nix has worked in media and politics, and in education and mental health. His talk also brings in psychology and theology, along with hip hop and street culture. According to the organisers, it is suitable for all ages and is meant as a family occasion.
The talk starts at 6.30pm on Wednesday 14 October. The Black Cultural Archives is at 1 Windrush Square, SW2 1EF, and more details are on its events page.
