The Bike Project, a Deptford charity that restores donated bikes for refugees, is opening its workshop to the public on Saturday 19 September from 11am to 3pm, with second-hand bikes on sale from £199.

The open day comes ahead of the London Cycling Festival. Any bike costing more than £250 bought in store on the day will be 10% cheaper, and the charity’s mechanics will be on hand to help buyers choose the right model.

Second-hand bikes on sale in Deptford

The stock covers bikes for children, commuting, racing and weekend riding, with brands including Brompton, Cannondale and Trek. Every bike has been refurbished by the charity’s mechanics. The charity suggests the sale could suit children who need a bike for getting to school now term has started, as well as new students at Goldsmiths.

Visitors can also look behind the scenes in the workshop, where donated bikes are fixed up before being passed on to refugees. Because the workshop is open on a Saturday, people can take a bike for a test ride before paying. The team is led by workshop manager Maria Domench Serrano, and the charity says customers have rated it 4.9 out of 5 across hundreds of reviews.

Money from each sale goes back into the charity’s work giving bikes to refugees and people seeking asylum. “A donated bike enables refugees to access education, healthcare, legal appointments and community,” said Maria Domench Serrano. The workshop manager also pointed out that many refugees live on £9.95 a week, so cutting the cost of getting around matters a great deal.

How to find the workshop and donate a bike

The workshop is at Arch 224, Edward Place, SE8 5HD, about five minutes on foot from New Cross Gate, which is served by the Overground and National Rail. Bikes currently in stock can be browsed at shop.thebikeproject.co.uk, and appointments for a test ride can be booked by email.

Anyone with an unwanted bike can donate it on the same Saturday but should register it with the charity beforehand at thebikeproject.co.uk/donate-bike. Donated bikes can also be dropped off at Herne Hill Velodrome.
