The British Museum is extending opening hours for its Bayeux exhibition after visitors complained of queues lasting hours, crowded galleries and, in some cases, being refused entry.

The 11th-century embroidery tells the story of the Norman conquest of England and went on display last month. It has become one of the most in-demand shows the museum has staged in recent years, and tickets for the remainder of 2026 have all gone.

What changes at the exhibition

The museum says later closing should stop queues forming and give visitors with late time slots enough time to get into the gallery. It should also allow more space between bookings. The museum has not yet said what the new hours will be or how they will apply to people who already have tickets. It expects to publish those details soon.

From Monday, visitors can use an audio guide that gives more detail on the embroidery. More signs are going up in the gallery to explain its different sections. Extra seating is also being added for people who need a break while they wait to reach the display case.

One of the complaints came from ticket holders who could not get in on a particular day. The museum had shut its doors earlier than usual to host an evening event, and the Chancellor was among those attending. The museum now says anyone who was turned away will get their money back, along with priority when they book a new visit.

A museum spokesperson said the public reaction had been “extraordinary” and admitted that “some visitors have faced longer queues than we would have wanted”.
