Visitors will be able to look round Admirals’ House in Greenwich this December, a rare chance to see inside. The house is part of the Old Royal Naval College and is usually kept private. Tickets have to be booked ahead.
Set above the Thames, it ranks among the oldest parts of the college site still standing. It was once the official home of the Royal Hospital for Seamen’s governor.
For the openings, all four of the house’s rooms will be dressed with Christmas decorations. The college is calling the dates social media days, aimed at people who want to take photographs for non-commercial use.
A camera is not a condition of entry. Anyone who simply wants to see a building that rarely opens to the public can book and walk round without taking a single picture.
The house will open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays over three weeks in December. Places are sold in advance only, through the Old Royal Naval College.
Access to the ground floor is step-free and fully accessible. Upstairs is harder to reach. The building has no lift, so getting to the first floor means climbing a staircase of 30 steps.
