Hammersmith Road cycleway to become permanent after council backs TfL’s £20m plan
Cabinet voted unanimously for the C9 scheme, which adds three floating bus stops. A resident had urged councillors to reject it over safety.
Brixton, Stockwell, Vauxhall and Pimlico lose their Victoria line trains from 7.30pm on 3 October until 10am on Sunday.
Victoria line trains will not run between Victoria and Brixton from 7.30pm on Saturday 3 October until 10am on Sunday 4 October. TfL is closing that stretch to repair a faulty junction just outside Brixton station.
Four stations will have no Victoria line service while the work goes on: Brixton, Stockwell, Vauxhall and Pimlico. Southbound trains will finish their journeys at Victoria.
The fault is a set of points at the junction outside Brixton, which was found about a week ago. Since then trains have had to cross the junction more slowly than normal. That has cut the service to 24 trains an hour, compared with the usual 40 at peak times, and passengers travelling south of Victoria have faced delays.
The repair has taken longer than planned, so TfL has decided to shut the junction and carry out a full repair. The whole damaged junction is understood to need replacing. Work on that scale cannot be finished in the few hours the line is closed overnight, which is why a longer weekend shutdown is needed.
A TfL spokesperson confirmed that southbound trains will run on past the platforms at Victoria into two sidings just south of the station. There they will reverse and head back into Victoria to pick up passengers going north.
Those sidings date from the line’s early years, when Victoria was its southern end between 1969 and 1971. Victoria is the last station where southbound trains can stop and turn round, which is why the closure takes in every station beyond it.
Passengers can check the latest service on TfL’s Tube status page before setting out.
