Tom Kemble's pizzeria is taking over the arch next door for a bar with a dedicated martini list and its own menu of meatballs, fritti and mortadella sliders.
Spring Street Pizza in Borough is expanding into the arch next door, where chef Tom Kemble plans to open an Italian American bar in October 2026.
Before the pizzeria, Kemble’s earlier restaurant at Bonham’s earned him a Michelin star. Spring Street has since built a following of its own, which is no small thing in a city with as many pizza places as London. The neighbouring arch will give the business room for up to 200 people, with cocktails and bar food on offer.
According to the team, the bar will have South London’s “first dedicated martini list”. Italian wines and beers will also be served.
The kitchen will not repeat the pizza menu. Plans include crudo and fritti, house meatballs served with red sauce and pecorino, and mortadella sliders topped with scamorza and pickled jalapeños.
Explaining the idea, Kemble said: “We’ve always been drawn to New York’s Italian-American neighbourhood restaurants and bars.” He described them as places where people drop in for a drink and end up staying for food. The new space, he said, would take the team beyond pizza, with a larger drinks offer and a menu built from scratch.
The pizzeria shut for a short time while the work was carried out and reopens this week. The bar is expected to follow in October, and no exact opening date has been given yet.
The address given for the bar is Arch 32-33, Southwark Quarter, Southwark Street, SE1 1TE. Updates appear on the Spring Street website and on Instagram at @springstpizza.
