The National Gallery has sold more than 22,000 tickets for its Renoir exhibition in the six weeks since booking opened. The museum says no show has sold faster at its box office. Renoir and Love opens on 3 October 2026 and runs until 31 January 2027.

Gallery members could book from 4 August, and general sale started on 25 August. A museum spokesperson said the earlier record for the same stretch belonged to Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers in 2024, which sold 15,654 tickets.

That Van Gogh show is also the gallery’s most visited ticketed exhibition. Figures published by the Museums Association put it at 334,589 visits, a total that includes 24-hour opening over its last weekend.

What is in the National Gallery Renoir exhibition

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is represented by 45 works, from the start of his career up to the late 1880s. The Musée d’Orsay is lending one of his best-known pictures, Dance at the Moulin de la Galette, which he painted in 1876. It has never been shown in the UK before.

The gallery has not staged an exhibition focused on Renoir since 2007. The show arrives from Paris, where a press statement says it ranked among the Orsay’s best-attended exhibitions.

Paris and Boston partnership

The National Gallery is putting on the exhibition together with the Musée d’Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The show travels to Boston in February 2027. Gabriele Finaldi, the National Gallery’s director, said the partnership was letting the gallery “bring the very best of Renoir to the UK”. He described it as one of the most important exhibitions of the artist’s work in decades.
