HMP Brixton’s prison-run restaurant to serve festive roasts from 1 December
Diners must book a week of working days ahead, be adults with photo ID and clear airport-style security to eat at the prison training restaurant.
The 60-seat restaurant opposite the meat market will serve Victorian-era British and Irish dishes built around offal and lesser-known cuts. It is due to open in October 2026.
The team behind Camille, the French restaurant at Borough Market, will open a new restaurant called B. Penhale in the former Club Gascon building at 57 West Smithfield in October 2026.
The team is already shortening the name to Penhale’s. The restaurant sits across the road from the historic meat market. Where Camille looks to France, the new kitchen will turn to Britain and Ireland, cooking traditional Victorian-era dishes and putting offal and lesser-known cuts of meat on the menu.
Chef Elliot Hashtroudi’s family history is tied to Smithfield. The restaurant carries the name of his grandmother, who had a connection with the market. His great-grandmother also worked there, as a butcher.
The team describes its aim as “shining a light on the food, stories and cultural history of Britain and Ireland”. St John, which is also known for cooking offal, is a short walk away across the market.
The dining room will have 60 seats. Next to it will be a small bar for walk-in guests, working from its own chalkboard menu rather than the restaurant’s.
Pascal Aussignac, the chef who owned Club Gascon, has given the new team his support. He said he hoped Penhale’s would enjoy “the same success that Club Gascon had over a generation”.
The neighbourhood is changing around it. The Horses opened nearby recently, and the new Museum of London, which will have several restaurants and bars of its own, is close to opening.
Penhale’s is due to open in October 2026. Updates are posted on Instagram at @b.penhale_smithfield.
