Hammersmith Road cycleway to become permanent after council backs TfL’s £20m plan
Cabinet voted unanimously for the C9 scheme, which adds three floating bus stops. A resident had urged councillors to reject it over safety.
Round-the-clock track renewal at Kent Gateway West starts on 24 October. Road restrictions nearby stay in place until 24 November.
The tram service linking New Addington with East Croydon will be suspended from 24 October until 5 November while TfL renews the track at Kent Gateway West. Crews will be on site day and night so the job can be finished as quickly as possible.
TfL said the renewal belongs to a wider programme to modernise the network. Better track should mean fewer faults, and the organisation said passengers would get a more reliable service once it is done.
The works will also close part of the road. Kent Gateway will be shut to north-eastbound traffic on the stretch from the Lodge Lane roundabout to the tram crossing beside Gravel Hill.
Those restrictions are expected to run from 24 October to 24 November, so drivers will still be held up for almost three weeks after the trams return. Motorists will be signed onto Gravel Hill and then Shirley Hills Road, before picking up the A232. The detour carries on along Addington Road and brings traffic back onto Kent Gate Way.
People living close to the site received a letter from TfL on 6 October. It told them that heavy machinery would make construction noise and that, with work going on 24 hours a day, some disturbance could not be avoided. “Although some noise and increased traffic in your area is unavoidable, we will do our best to limit any disturbance,” the letter said.
TfL said noise would be controlled using “Best Practicable Means”, in line with the Control of Pollution Act 1974. It will work closely with Croydon Council while the project runs, and it has apologised for the disruption.

The north-eastbound stretch between the Lodge Lane roundabout and the tram crossing beside Gravel Hill is expected to stay shut from 24 October to 24 November.
TfL said it is part of a modernisation programme to improve the track's condition, make it more reliable and give passengers a better service.
