The Metropolitan Police will have 400 officers on duty for Millwall v West Ham at The Den on Saturday 19 September. Kick-off is at 12.30pm. The two London clubs have not played each other since 2012.
A Championship game usually needs between 60 and 150 officers, so the force is sending around four times the normal number. Every officer will be trained in public order policing and will wear riot gear, but they will not carry shields.
A Section 35 dispersal order will cover the area around the ground and allows officers to remove anyone causing disorder. The Met said the Sporting Events Act 1985 also applies, as it does at every fixture. That makes it illegal to enter the ground, or try to, while drunk.
Dispersal orders are normally kept for fixtures with bitter rivalries. Arsenal against Tottenham in north London is one example. The Met said it had worked with both clubs so that fans could enjoy the game safely.
To keep the two sets of fans apart, supporters will be sent to particular Tube and rail stations. West Ham has told its fans that South Bermondsey is the station for away supporters. Frequent trains run there from London Bridge and take a few minutes, and fans coming from further away can change at London Bridge.
A walkway runs from South Bermondsey to the away turnstiles, and police will escort Hammers fans from the station to the ground. The club said away fans who arrive at other nearby stations will be turned back and sent to South Bermondsey.
West Ham top the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League last year, and Millwall are 11th. West Ham won 2-1 when the teams last met in the league, in February 2012. At a Carling Cup tie between them in 2009, a man was stabbed and fans ran onto the pitch three times.
