Hammersmith Road cycleway to become permanent after council backs TfL’s £20m plan
Cabinet voted unanimously for the C9 scheme, which adds three floating bus stops. A resident had urged councillors to reject it over safety.
TfL's £10.8m project should let lorries back onto the flyover. Work will pause at the end of November for the Christmas shopping period.
TfL begins a £10.8 million scheme to reinforce the Brent Cross flyover on the evening of Wednesday 30 September, and drivers are being warned of heavy disruption. The flyover carries the A41 Hendon Way over the A406 North Circular Road at one of north London’s busiest junctions.
TfL said the structure needed the work to stay safe and dependable for years to come, so that it does not have to be shut suddenly later on. The flyover is being strengthened and its safety barriers replaced. A new waterproofing system is also going in. When the job is finished, heavy goods vehicles should be allowed back on the route. They were banned from it in 2022 over safety concerns.
Overnight closures on stretches of the A41 and the A406 are among the first changes. From October, Hendon Way will also lose lanes. On 29 October a contraflow starts on the flyover itself, which leaves drivers with less room. On the westbound A406, restricted lanes should stay until November 2026.
Signed diversions will be in place whenever roads are shut. TfL said residents and drivers would get advance warning of major traffic changes. It also plans to adjust signals and take other steps to cut congestion.
Queues are expected on sections of the A41, the A406, the A5 Edgware Road and the A1. TfL is asking drivers on longer journeys to use the M25 rather than drive through Brent Cross where they can. For short local trips, it is encouraging people to walk or cycle. Local buses will keep running but will face the same restrictions as other traffic.
The flyover sits next to Brent Cross Shopping Centre, so construction will stop at the end of November for the Christmas trading period. It will restart in early January. This is the first stage of a wider renewal of the interchange. Later phases are expected to cover the roundabout and the North Circular slip roads.
The first phase begins on the evening of Wednesday 30 September.
TfL expects congestion on parts of the A41, the A406 North Circular Road, the A5 Edgware Road and the A1. Stretches of the A41 and A406 will also close overnight.
