The Metropolitan Police has set the route for the National March for Palestine through central London on Saturday 10 October. Under its conditions, the closing rally in Whitehall has to break up by 6.30pm.

As many as 10,000 people could join the march, which the Palestine Solidarity Campaign has organised three years after the war in Gaza began. Coaches are bringing demonstrators from Bristol, Manchester, Coventry and other cities.

Palestine march route and timings

Marchers will gather on Victoria Embankment from midday, near Northumberland Avenue, with a trade union bloc forming close to Cleopatra’s Needle. Until the procession sets off, participants must stay inside the assembly area marked out by police.

From there the march crosses the river on Westminster Bridge, heads along York Road and comes back over Waterloo Bridge before following the Strand to Whitehall. Nobody taking part may stray from that route. Police have also set aside a lane for emergency access across the bridge and along the road leading from it, and marchers must keep out of it. Speeches and music at the rally must stop by 5.30pm.

Face coverings and a counter-protest

The Met has warned that people covering their faces could be arrested, and says hate crime and other offences will be met with zero tolerance. A pro-Israel Stop the Hate counter-demonstration is also planned. Police said they were in talks with its organisers and considering conditions for that event too.

Eleven people were arrested over offences linked to protests in central London on Wednesday, the third anniversary of the 7 October attacks.

Carl Galvin, the deputy assistant commissioner in charge of policing the weekend, said the force aims “to protect the lawful right to protest while minimising the impact on those who live, work and visit London”. He said there would be a significant police presence on Saturday.

The organisers want military action in Gaza to stop immediately, an end to UK arms exports to Israel, and sanctions.
